Love Never Fails

Welcome to our Spiritual Journey Weblog – a journey of faith and love in action to provide encouragement for your walk of faith in a faithless world.

There’s a story of a beautiful young woman, who, upon completion of the wedding ceremony was presented by her new husband with a handwritten list of his “requirements” of his new wife. She opened the list and read it in stunned silence. Her face said it all: It was apparent he had not “taken a wife” he had taken a live-in slave.

In those days divorce was unheard of, so she proudly held her head high and delved into her new life as her husband’s chattel, determined, with God’s help, to be the best wife she could possibly be.

Unfortunately, she often failed miserably at her assigned tasks bringing her husband’s furious ire and endured frequent beatings. For ten years she worked hard in servitude to this man, and then suddenly he died, leaving her penniless.

As she stood looking down at his face in the coffin, she vowed in her heart never to become any man’s wife again. She was free at last and she would cherish that freedom for as long as she lived.

She was so relieved to be released from her marital bondage that she didn’t mind her poor means. In fact, she had become so proficient at cleaning, cooking, plowing and hoeing that it wasn’t long until she found work for a widower whose wife had died leaving him with the responsibility of raising of two adolescent girls. He was very grateful for her help and praised her often for the work she was doing.

Not accustomed to anyone praising her she found herself falling in love with him and, to her surprise, soon found herself at the wedding alter once again, her vow not to re-marry forgotten along with the memory of the mean, domineering husband of her past.

Love had won; the old became new. Many years passed and their love continued to grow and flourish along with their family.

Then, one day while going through an old chest from her past life, she discovered the list her first husband had given her on her first wedding day. She read the list in amazement, remembering the cruelty of her deceased husband when she was learning to do the chores listed. Tears filled her eyes as she remembered how she had hated to do the tasks on that list!

Yet, as she slowly read the list, a smile broke through the tears. Not once had her new husband asked her to do any of those things, but she had done them all willingly and without regret for him. The difference was love. She did them in response to his love and that of their children.

Love never fails. It might hurt sometimes; it might take many unexpected pathways. But love, like God, is unfailing.
